My main message is to wake people up. To make them feel themselves; to make them feel their spirit; to be in touch with their innermost. Yeah…That’s exactly what I am talking about.
My name is Nneka Egbuna. I come from Nigeria. I am a musician.
That’s why I am carrying a guitar. I play the guitar.
Music is therapy for me. Performing on stage means a lot to me.
It’s like being in a church or in a shrine.
My music is very conscious; very political. In the studio it’s more...I’m in my thoughts and I’m not speaking. Or better to say I’m not confronted with the person I’m trying to talk to directly, you know? It’s more like I’m having conversation with myself in the studio, and then eventually, that conversation I then share with the world. So it’s like on stage, too.
I’m trying to bring Africa into America. Better to say, I’m trying to Africanize America with my music. And like if you see the cover work, I have my face, my portrait and the African continent, the map and the states of America inside Africa. So…yeah…that’s some…the way they say here?... That’s some real shit. Are they going to edit that? Beep! No? Ok.
Oh! What influences me? My music is basically life - life in general. People on the streets. My life experience – black woman in Nigeria, growing up in a place that is quite tough; very tough to live.
There’s so much that I, myself, have to learn in my life, you know? And there’s still much that I do not know. So basically, at the same time I’m sharing my music with people, [I’m] learning from that sharing. Learning from the words that are coming out of my mouth because I think sometimes at the very point in time when I’m on stage, it’s not just me that is talking. It’s God that talks through me.
